WhatsApp Business Platform vs QR-code automation

Many tools, including Spaces, connect a WhatsApp account by scanning a QR code instead of using the WhatsApp Business Platform. This page explains what WhatsApp's own terms say about each, including whether WhatsApp can ban you.

The Business Platform: WhatsApp's route for businesses

WhatsApp's help centre says it built two tools to help companies manage customer interactions: the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business Platform. On the Platform, the Business Messaging Policy requires opt-in and approved Message Templates to start conversations. It allows free-form replies, including automated replies with escalation paths to a person, within the 24-hour customer service window.

QR-code connections: what WhatsApp's Terms say

WhatsApp's Terms of Service say you will not use the Services in ways that "involve sending illegal or impermissible communications such as bulk messaging, auto-messaging, auto-dialing, and the like" or "involve any non-personal use of our Services unless otherwise authorized by us." WhatsApp's Messaging Guidelines also list "use unofficial clients, bulk messaging, auto-messaging, auto-dialing, or automation to harm WhatsApp or our users" as adversarial behaviour.

Can WhatsApp ban you?

Yes. WhatsApp's help article "Unauthorized use of automated or bulk messaging on WhatsApp" says its products "are not intended for bulk or automated messaging, both of which have always been a violation of our Terms of Service." It says WhatsApp bans accounts using machine-learning classifiers and takes legal action against people or companies engaged in or assisting such abuse. That includes action based on "public claims from companies about their ability to use WhatsApp in ways that violate our Terms." The Messaging Guidelines say actions include temporarily or permanently suspending an account.

Where Spaces stands

Spaces connects your own account by QR code. Its own Terms say accounts are connected as your own personal or business accounts, that Spaces is not affiliated with Meta, and that any platform restriction or ban is yours to manage. Spaces' Terms also forbid bulk unsolicited messages and cold outreach, and require you to stop messaging anyone who asks.

FAQ

What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business Platform and QR-code tools?

The Business Platform is WhatsApp's own tool for businesses, governed by its Business Messaging Policy. QR-code tools connect a regular account, which is governed by WhatsApp's Terms of Service.

Can WhatsApp ban you for using an unofficial tool?

WhatsApp says bulk or automated messaging has always violated its Terms, that it bans accounts using machine-learning classifiers, and that its Messaging Guidelines list using unofficial clients or automation to harm WhatsApp or its users as adversarial behaviour.

Can WhatsApp take legal action?

WhatsApp says it takes legal action against individuals or companies engaged in or assisting automated or bulk messaging or non-personal use, including based on public claims companies make about their ability to use WhatsApp in ways that violate its Terms.

Is Spaces part of the WhatsApp Business Platform?

No. Spaces connects your own WhatsApp account by QR code and is not affiliated with Meta or WhatsApp.
