LinkedIn messages with AI: what is allowed and what is not

Estate agents, recruiters and consultants often get as many enquiries on LinkedIn as anywhere else. An AI agent can help you answer them, but LinkedIn is strict about automation, so it is worth knowing the rules before you start.

What LinkedIn's rules say

LinkedIn's User Agreement prohibits using bots or other unauthorised automated methods to send messages, add contacts, or post, comment and react. LinkedIn's own Messages API is open only to approved partners. That means any tool that connects your own account carries a risk of restriction, and that includes Spaces. Our article on automating LinkedIn messages quotes the rules in full.

Answering your inbox vs cold outreach

There is a big difference between an agent that answers people who wrote to you and one that sends hundreds of connection requests and pitches to strangers. The second is what LinkedIn watches for most, and Spaces is not built for it.

Spaces is for conversations people start with you, and for people who know you and expect to hear from you. Its Terms rule out bought or scraped lists and cold outreach at scale.

The limits Spaces keeps on LinkedIn

  • At least 20 seconds between messages.
  • Up to 100 messages a day per account.
  • At most 30 new chats a day, and 8 a day in the first week after connecting.
  • Connection requests: 5 an hour, 20 a day and 100 a week, and 5 a day in the first week.

A normal message goes to a 1st-degree connection. Anyone else needs a connection request or an InMail. Spaces also refuses the same cold message sent to many people and stops messaging anyone who says stop.

Keeping your account safe

  • Use your real, established account, not a new one.
  • Let the agent answer people who wrote to you, and keep anything new to people who expect to hear from you.
  • Read the agent's replies for the first few days.
  • Stop at once if LinkedIn asks you to verify the account. Spaces pauses sending until you reconnect.

FAQ

Can I use AI to reply to LinkedIn messages?

Spaces lets an AI agent read and reply to your LinkedIn inbox. LinkedIn's rules prohibit unauthorised automated messaging, so read them first and decide whether the risk suits you.

Is there a safe number of LinkedIn messages a day?

LinkedIn does not publish one. Spaces enforces its own limits on every account, which are not a promise about how LinkedIn will treat it.

Can the agent send connection requests?

Yes, within Spaces' limits of 5 an hour, 20 a day and 100 a week. Send them only to people who would expect to hear from you.
