WhatsApp Business app vs WhatsApp Business API
There are two kinds of WhatsApp for business, and they are built for very different jobs. The free WhatsApp Business app is for a business answering its customers by hand. The WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the API, is for companies sending approved messages to large numbers of people through software. Here is how they differ, and where an AI agent on your own number fits.
Side by side
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business Platform (API) | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Small businesses replying by hand | Companies messaging at scale through software |
| Cost | The app itself is free | Per-message fees from Meta, plus the provider you use |
| Starting a conversation | Write to anyone who has your number | Approved message templates outside the 24-hour window |
| Approval | None | Business verification with Meta |
| Where you reply | On your phone and linked devices | Through a provider's software or your own code |
| Automation | Greeting and away messages, quick replies | Full automation within Meta's rules |
When the app is enough
If customers message you and you or your team reply, the free app does the job. Its greeting and away messages and quick replies cover the basics. What it cannot do on its own is understand a question and answer it, book a slot or take an order while you are busy.
When you need the Business Platform
If you send order updates, reminders or promotions to thousands of people who opted in, you need the Business Platform. It is built for broadcasting approved templates at scale, and you pay Meta for each message. Setting it up means business verification, writing templates and getting them approved.
The middle path: an AI agent on your own number
Many businesses want something in between: their existing number and app, plus an assistant that answers customers when they cannot. Spaces connects the number you already use by QR code, so an AI agent such as Claude or ChatGPT can read and reply, with no templates, approvals or Meta message fees. Read the box above on WhatsApp's rules first.
It is built for answering people who message you, not for broadcasts. Spaces keeps every number inside safe limits: at least 15 seconds between messages, up to 200 a day, and no copy-paste blasts.

FAQ
Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and the API on the same number?
It depends on the provider: some now let one number use both, others need a number of its own. Spaces works differently: it links your number like a computer, and the app keeps working on your phone.
Is the WhatsApp Business app free?
Yes. The app is free to download and use.
Do I need the API to use AI on WhatsApp?
Not necessarily. If you mainly answer people who message you, an AI agent connected to your own number is simpler. If you broadcast to large lists, you need the Business Platform.
